Srinagar, June 30: Minister for Education, Social Welfare, Health and Medical Education Sakeena Itoo on Monday called for the responsible and ethical adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying the technology is transforming education, governance and multiple sectors of human activity.
She was addressing the valedictory session of a two-day Digital Readiness Workshop for Academic Leaders on the theme “Building AI-Ready Institutions” held at the University of Kashmir (KU) in collaboration with Intel.
The workshop brought together academic leaders, administrators and faculty members to strengthen institutional capacity for integrating AI into teaching, research, governance and academic administration. It aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and strategic skills for building technology-driven, future-ready institutions.
Sakeena Itoo said AI is rapidly becoming indispensable across professions and highlighted its applications in healthcare, agriculture and disaster management. However, she stressed that while AI can process vast data and offer insights, it cannot replace human wisdom, empathy and ethical judgement.
She urged institutions to ensure that AI remains a tool to complement human intelligence, not replace it, and called for a strong ethical framework in its use. She also encouraged participants to apply the learnings in their respective institutions for the public good.
Vice-Chancellor KU Prof. Nilofer Khan congratulated participants and appreciated the positive response to the programme. She said the university would continue such capacity-building initiatives in collaboration with industry partners like Intel to promote innovation and academic excellence.
Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal and Intel’s National Program Manager Ms. Shatarupa Dasgupta emphasised the importance of academia–industry collaboration in building AI-ready institutions. They said the workshop provided valuable practical insights for integrating AI into institutional systems.
Workshop Coordinator Dr. Javaid Ahmad Sheikh highlighted the objectives and outcomes of the programme and thanked all stakeholders for their support. Certificates were also distributed among participants.
The valedictory session was attended by principals, university officials, faculty members and academic leaders from KU and affiliated colleges.
