Srinagar, November 1: A meeting of the National Conference’s Eidgah block unit is underway at the Srinagar residence of senior party leader and Eidgah MLA Mubarak Gul, amid uncertainty surrounding recent organisational changes within the party.
The meeting has brought together block in-charges, party functionaries, Halqa representatives, members of Mohalla Committees and workers from the Eidgah constituency.
Discussions are focused on strengthening the party at the grassroots level, reviewing ongoing organisational activities, improving coordination among workers and chalking out future strategies, sources said.
The gathering assumes significance in view of the developments surrounding Mubarak Gul’s appointment as the party’s General Secretary.
On October 27, National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah appointed Gul to the post after Ali Mohammad Sagar joined the Omar Abdullah-led Council of Ministers.
However, a subsequent order issued on October 30 directed Sagar to continue as General Secretary until further orders, creating uncertainty over Gul’s appointment.
Sources close to Gul had earlier indicated that he had not accepted the position. His supporters were reportedly urging him to step down amid dissatisfaction over his exclusion from the recent Cabinet expansion.
Gul has announced that he will address the recent organisational developments during a press conference scheduled for November 4.
The meeting at his residence is being closely watched against the backdrop of these developments within the National Conference.
