New Delhi, September 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted the crucial role of teachers in shaping young minds and urged educators to help children deal with growing challenges such as excessive screen time and drug addiction.

Modi interacted with winners of the National Teachers’ Awards at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg ahead of Teachers’ Day. The Prime Minister said teachers have a responsibility that extends beyond academic instruction and called for greater attention to the overall development of children.

During the interaction, Modi urged teachers to remain alert to signs of drug addiction among students and help young people overcome the problem. He also stressed the need to address excessive screen use among children by encouraging sports, physical activities and creative pursuits.

The Prime Minister called upon teachers to preserve childhood and nurture children's natural curiosity. He said education should create an environment where students can explore, ask questions and develop their abilities with confidence.

Teachers’ Day is observed across India on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President and educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The occasion recognises the contribution of teachers to society and pays tribute to his legacy in education.

The interaction with award-winning teachers comes as the education sector faces new challenges linked to technology, changing learning patterns and the well-being of children. The government has increasingly emphasised innovation, technology-enabled education and holistic development alongside academic achievement.
