Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday carried out multiple rescue operations across the Union Territory, saving more than 40 people stranded at different locations due to heavy snowfall, while Srinagar Police activated round-the-clock emergency helpline services amid worsening weather conditions.
In Poonch district, police rescued over 30 passengers stranded in the Krishna Ghati area of Mendhar after their vehicles were caught in intense snowfall. Officials said the passengers had remained stuck for several hours before police teams rushed to the spot and safely evacuated them to safer locations despite difficult road and weather conditions.
In another operation, Udhampur Police rescued 12 persons, including women and children, who were stranded in a heavy snowstorm at Chochru Galla in the Basantgarh area. The group was trapped due to sudden snowfall and poor visibility. Police personnel braved harsh weather and challenging terrain to carry out the rescue, and all rescued individuals were reported to be safe.
Meanwhile, Srinagar Police activated 24x7 emergency helpline services to assist residents facing difficulties due to snowfall and cold conditions. Officials said the helplines will respond to emergencies, including distress calls related to weather-induced incidents.
Police authorities have advised residents and travellers to avoid unnecessary movement, especially in higher reaches, and to strictly follow official advisories. Police teams remain on high alert across districts to respond swiftly to any emergency arising from the prevailing weather conditions.
