Rising Food Prices Force Kashmir Families to Cut Back on Meat, Eggs

July 15, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, July 15: Escalating prices of essential food items have emerged as a growing concern across Kashmir, with consumers alleging inadequate market regulation and arbitrary pricing by retailers, adding to the financial strain on households.

Residents from several districts said mutton is being sold for ₹800–₹820 per kilogram, while chicken is retailing between ₹200 and ₹210 per kilogram. Paneer is reportedly priced at around ₹310 per kilogram, and a tray of eggs is selling for nearly ₹250 in many markets.

Consumers also pointed to a sharp rise in vegetable prices over the past few weeks, saying the increase has made it increasingly difficult for middle- and lower-income families to manage their daily household expenses.

"There appears to be little accountability in the market. Every seller is charging according to his own will, and there is hardly any monitoring of retail prices," a consumer in Srinagar said.

Residents alleged that despite repeated complaints about soaring prices, the authorities have failed to carry out effective market inspections or ensure compliance with notified rates.

Many families, they said, have been forced to reduce or avoid purchasing items such as mutton, chicken and eggs, which were once regular staples in household diets, due to the rising cost of living.

Consumers have urged the administration to step up market inspections, regulate the prices of essential commodities and take action against traders found violating prescribed rates. They said strict enforcement of price control measures is necessary to protect consumers from overcharging and keep essential food items affordable.
