Shopian, Jan 28: A severe drinking water crisis has gripped several hamlets of South Kashmir’s Shopian district, forcing residents—especially women—to fetch water from sources nearly three kilometres away for the past week.
Women in villages including Sedow, Bemnipora, Hajipora and Memandar have been carrying water on their shoulders daily under harsh conditions to meet basic household needs. Locals said the shortage of potable water has disrupted normal life and added to their hardships.
Residents said the absence of a regular drinking water supply has left families struggling, with women bearing the brunt of the crisis. Despite repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, they alleged that no effective measures have been taken so far.
Calling access to safe drinking water a basic necessity, villagers said the prolonged neglect reflects administrative apathy. They warned that the situation could worsen if immediate steps are not taken.
The affected inhabitants have urged the district administration to intervene without delay and ensure a sustainable solution to end the water shortage and relieve them of their daily ordeal.
