November 21, 2025 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ), School of Media Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) organised a special lecture on “Television from the Perspective of News Genre” to mark the World Television Day, at Tulmulla here Friday.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath conveyed his wishes for the successful conduct of the event.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Rakesh Khar, Editor, English Cluster, TV9 Network, traced the evolution of television news in India, beginning from the early phases of broadcasting to the contemporary multi-screen, platform-driven era. He said, “Television has moved from appointment viewing to anytime streaming, yet its role as a storyteller and a major news shaper remains consistent.”  Mr. Khar discussed the ‘Five C Syndrome’- Comedy, Cricket, Cinema, Crime, and Chatter, which, according to him, during the 2000s era “dominated media space and risked making public discourse shallow and less relevant.” About the shift from linear to non-linear journalism, he emphasized, “there is a need for reliable verification systems, registered news organizations and regulated channels remain accountable for their content, while unregistered and unregulated platforms pose a threat to professional journalism.” He raised concern about ‘news avoidance’, explaining how a “significant section of the audience today chooses to disconnect from news due to fatigue, distrust, or overload.” The media industry, he said, “must introspect and rebuild meaningful engagement.”

In his remarks, Registrar, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir spoke about the significance of the Day and the transformative role TV has played in education and national development. He recalled the iconic Doordarshan programme for farming community ‘Butraat’, which disseminated agricultural knowledge to millions, contributing to rural empowerment and economic growth. Dr. Mir underlined that television continues to be an important pillar in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, where digital transformation will serve as a major driver of inclusive growth and informed citizenry.

Speaking on the occasion, Dean, School of Media Studies, Prof. Shahid Rasool, reflected on the future of the medium, stating, “Television as a device may become obsolete, but television as content can never die.” He pointed out that while screens have shifted from television sets to mobile phones, tablets, and laptops, the nature of storytelling and public communication continues uninterrupted.

Earlier, Dr. Arif Nazir, HoD, welcomed the guests and introduced the topic. Sr. Asst Profs. Dr. Asif Khan conducted the proceedings and Dr. John Babu facilitated the discussion. Dr. Nookaraju Bendukurthi, Asst Prof proposed vote of thanks.

Ms. Sofiya Shafqat and Ms. Aaliya Ahmad, Research Scholars, were the rapporteurs.
