Anantnag, Aug 30: The death of a young man from Kulgam at a private hospital in Anantnag has triggered a protest by his family, who have alleged medical negligence and called for a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Family members gathered at the hospital premises following the death and alleged lapses in the treatment provided to the patient. They demanded accountability and a thorough inquiry into the case.
The incident has also raised concerns over the functioning of private hospitals and nursing homes in Anantnag, particularly regarding the performance of complicated surgical procedures at facilities where adequate intensive care and emergency support may not be available.
Chief Medical Officer Anantnag, Dr Khalid Parvaiz, confirmed that the operation theatre of the concerned private hospital had been sealed following the incident.
“We have sealed the OT of the said private hospital,” the CMO said.
On concerns about complex surgeries being performed at private facilities without sufficient ICU support, Dr Parvaiz said the health department was working to strengthen monitoring of such procedures.
He said the department plans to issue directions to private hospitals in Anantnag requiring them to submit daily details of surgeries performed at their facilities.
The proposed reporting system would allow health authorities to identify hospitals conducting complicated procedures and assess whether they have adequate infrastructure, emergency facilities and critical-care support.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to regulatory oversight of private healthcare facilities in the district, including the availability of functional ICUs and emergency services for patients undergoing high-risk surgeries.
The circumstances surrounding the young man’s death and the allegations of medical negligence are expected to be examined as part of the authorities’ response.
