NIT Srinagar celebrates ‘Swachh Bharat Diwas-2024’ to mark Gandhi Jayanti

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday celebrated Swachh Bharat Diwas 2024, marking the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission and organised a special cleanliness drive as part of the 'Swachhata Pakhwada 2024 campaign.

The event was organised by the NSS unit of the Institute, drawing enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff members. The pledge ceremony was held at the Main Faculty Block at 9:30 AM and was administered by the student coordinators.

It was followed by a mega cleanliness drive carried out by sanitation staff accompanied by NSS student volunteers from Fountain Park to the Director's residence.

Under the banner of ' Swachhata Hi Seva' participants armed themselves with brooms, dustpans, and waste disposal equipment to embark on a comprehensive cleaning mission.

In his message Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Ravinder Nath said that cleanliness was one of Mahatma Gandhi’s core beliefs, and today, we pay our tribute to him by actively contributing to a cleaner and greener future.

“Such campaigns are the need of the hour, bringing hope for a cleaner and healthier environment,” he said.

Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Atikur Rehman also actively participated in the cleanliness drive and inspired others with his dedication to the cause.

“There is significance of Gandhi Jayanti as it is not only a day of remembrance but also an occasion for us to reflect on the values and principles that Mahatma Gandhi stood for,” he added.

The mega cleanliness drive was attended by NSS Coordinator, Dr. Jitendra Gurjar, Dr. Mukund Sharma, Dr H S Pali, Dr. Pramod Yadav, Hindi Officer Dr. Rajesh Shukla, Dr. Ashok Kumar and Dr. Brajendra Singh Sengar.

This year’s theme, ‘Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata,’ emphasises the importance of cleanliness and environmental well-being.

NIT Srinagar campus witnessed a flurry of activity as students, faculty, and staff worked tirelessly to ensure every nook and corner was spotless. The initiative extended its scope to include waste segregation and responsible disposal, promoting sustainable practices.

NSS Coordinator and Nodal Officer for Swachhata Pakhwada, Dr. Jitendra Gurjar highlighted the campaign's role in reminding the institute of its responsibility towards its surroundings and the environment.

He underscored the importance of collective action in instilling a sense of ownership among the students, encouraging them to be responsible citizens.

Dr. Gurjar expressed his gratitude to Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. A Ravinder Nath and Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman for their unwavering support of such initiatives on the campus.

He said the event showcased NIT Srinagar's dedication to promoting cleanliness, sustainability, and social responsibility, reflecting Mahatma Gandhi's values and inspiring a cleaner, greener future for everyone.
