Parents in Kashmir Seek 10 AM School Timings Amid Fall in Temperatures

October 05, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Oct 5: With temperatures dropping and mornings turning increasingly chilly across Kashmir, parents have urged the School Education Department to revise the existing school schedule and shift the start of classes from 9 am to 10 am.

Parents said the colder morning conditions are making it difficult for younger students to leave home early and reach their schools on time. They believe a later start would provide some relief to children as the weather continues to change and temperatures decline.

The demand follows a recent revision of school timings in the Jammu Division by the Directorate of School Education Jammu, which came into effect on October 1. Schools in the Summer Zone are operating from 9 am to 3 pm, while institutions in the Winter Zone are observing classes from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

In Kashmir, the Directorate of School Education revised school timings with effect from April 1. Schools within Srinagar municipal limits currently operate from 9 am to 3 pm, while schools outside the municipal limits and in other areas of the division function from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Parents have now called for a review of the existing timings in view of the changing weather, particularly the colder mornings. They have requested the authorities to consider a 10 am start to help reduce the difficulties faced by school-going children during the colder hours.
