The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday marked 150 years of Vande Mataram with a commemorative event that also saw the launch of a “Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign” on the campus.
The dual programme, aimed at promoting patriotism and public health awareness, was jointly coordinated by NSS Coordinator Dr. Pramod Yadav, ANO NCC Lt. Dr. Nitika Kundan, and EBSB Cell Coordinator Dr. Ashok Kumar.
The event began with a collective pledge and the mass singing of Vande Mataram, symbolizing unity and national pride. This was followed by a Tobacco Awareness Rally, during which participants raised slogans such as “Tobacco-Free India,” “Tobacco-Free Campus,” and “Tobacco-Free Me.”
The ceremony was graced by the presence of In-charge Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Roohie Naaz Mir, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rahman, Dr. H. S. Pali, Dr. Jitendra Gurjar, Dr. Janani L , other faculty, staff members, and over 200 students from various departments and cells of the institute.
In his message, Director NIT Srinagar Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia emphasized the enduring significance of Vande Mataram as a symbol of unity and cultural identity.
He also encouraged students to uphold social responsibility and contribute meaningfully to nation-building through positive actions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pramod Yadav, NSS Coordinator, said the event was an important step toward instilling values of patriotism and responsibility among students.
“Our aim is to make every student aware that serving the nation begins with self-discipline and healthy living. The Vande Mataram celebration and the anti-tobacco campaign both remind us that true freedom comes from being free of harmful habits and divisions,” he said.
Lt. Dr. Nitika Kundan, ANO NCC, highlighted the crucial role of youth in leading social transformation.
“Young people are the torchbearers of change. By taking a stand against tobacco and living responsibly, they can influence their peers and communities,” she said.
Dr Natika said that both NCC and NSS wings of NIT Srinagar are fully committed to supporting a tobacco-free and health-conscious campus.
As part of the “Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign,” the Medical Health Unit of the institute organized a free dental check-up camp for students and staff under the supervision of Dental Surgeon Dr. Urnaib Riyaz. The camp aimed to raise awareness about oral hygiene and the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.
Dr. Urnaib highlighted how tobacco use leads to preventable diseases, including oral cancer, and urged participants to adopt healthier lifestyles.
She stressed the importance of early awareness and preventive care in protecting future generations from addiction-related health issues.
Dental Assistant Ms. Mehvish Altaf also attended to students during the occasion, assisting in consultations and awareness activities.
The event reflected NIT Srinagar’s commitment to fostering both patriotic and socially responsible values among students. It also aligned with national efforts to promote a tobacco-free environment and healthier living standards.
The active involvement of NSS student coordinators Kundan Singh, Aryan Singh, Sneha Agrawal, and Taniya contributed to the successful execution of the campaign.
