Paying the White House Lunch Bill

Unfortunately, ISPR’s efforts to convince the domestic audience that Islamabad had diplomatically outmanoeuvred its Eastern neighbour by securing an extraordinary diplomatic victory over New Delhi didn’t play out as planned. The initial report that Field Marshal Munir had been specially invited to attend the US Armed Forces 250th anniversary turned out to be a dud when Washington clarified that no foreign dignitaries had been invited for this event

In a country where symbolism matters more than substance and success is measured in terms in comparative terms with India’s discomfiture serving as the common denominator, US President Donald Trump’s lunch invite must have come as a big relief for Pakistan’s newly [self?] promoted Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir desperately trying to play down his ungainly sobriquet of ‘Failed’ Marshal.
After all, an exclusive lunch with POTUS at the White House is no small thing, and Pakistan army’s media wing Inter Services Public Relations [ISPR] left no stone unturned to project Field Marshal Munir’s recent US visit as an indication that thanks to the efforts of its present army chief, Pakistan had entered the hitherto fore inaccessible portals of America’s exclusive diplomatic club.
Unfortunately, ISPR’s efforts to convince the domestic audience that Islamabad had diplomatically outmanoeuvred its Eastern neighbour by securing an extraordinary diplomatic victory over New Delhi didn’t play out as planned. The initial report that Field Marshal Munir had been specially invited to attend the US Armed Forces 250th anniversary turned out to be a dud when Washington clarified that no foreign dignitaries had been invited for this event.
Similarly, the much hyped ‘exclusive’ invite to Pakistan army’s army chief for the White House lunch suffered the same fate when it emerged that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had been invited for the same but had turned down this request that would compel him to sit on the lunch table and break bread with Field Marshal Munir. Modi’s refusal to be part of a meaningless charade exuded self respect and was in keeping with his position as prime minister, and the Pakistan army chief's enforced invite would have surely come as a big humiliation to the Field Marshal.
Furthermore, Trump’s admission that “Prime Minister Modi and General Munir decided not to keep going with that war [Operation Sindoor]” busted Rawalpindi’s false claim that it was India that begged for a ceasefire must have definitely embarrassed the Field Marshal who had purportedly been promoted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for successfully giving a "slap to the enemy [India] that will be remembered for all times to come" nose and forcing New Delhi to come on its knees and sue for peace!
But things didn’t end here. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister also exposed ISPR's lies by confirming that after the Indian missile strike on Pakistan’s Nur Khan air base, he had spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Washington and also “authorised” Saudi prince Faisal bin Salman to speak with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishakar for ending hostilities. Coming from the horse's mouth, this revelation completely demolishes Rawalpindi's fallacious claims of having emerged as the undisputed victors in this four day conflict.
What exactly transpired during the Trump- Munir lunch remains largely nebulous. ISPR has been delightfully vague, stating that the Israel-Iran conflagration was discussed “with both leaders emphasising the importance of resolving the conflict.” Trump has however been more forthcoming. Acknowledging that the Pakistanis ‘know Iran very well,” he added that “they’re not happy about anything.” And his cryptic remark that “he [Field Marshal Munir] agreed with me,” clearly suggests that as a host, Trump did manage to extract some commitment to support US stand/actions on this conflict from his lone guest.
Besides undisclosed agreements made during the White House lunch, this event also resulted in Pakistan nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize citing his “decisive diplomatic intervention” that [according to Islamabad] helped in “averting a broader conflict between the two nuclear states that would have had catastrophic consequences for millions of people in the region and beyond”.” However, since India and Pakistan have already fought the more than two month long Kargil War in 1999 without crossing the nuclear threshold, it’s left to the reader to decide whether Islamabad’s questionable adducement has any merit at all.
However, Trump ordering military action against Iran has caught Islamabad in a bind, as the apostle of peace that it considers worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize has within just a few days declared war on Iran by launching unprovoked attacks on even though America’s intelligence community, UN inspectors as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] have gone on record to state that there is no evidence that Tehran is developing a nuclear weapon.
While Pakistan may have condemned the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and upheld Tehran’s right to self defence, there are rumours and good reasons to believe that in order to remain in Trump’s good books Pakistan’s Field Marshal would have no qualms in providing covert support to US war efforts against Iran. Moreover given his fanatical religious calling, the Sunni Muslim Munir could well perceive waging and indirect war against the Shia Muslim Iran nation as an obligatory sacred duty.
Whatever the motivation or outcome may be, the indisputable reality is that in today’s world, there are no free lunches, and as such Field Marshal Munir will definitely have to pay the White House lunch bill!
