District Police Anantnag issues a public alert regarding the circulation of a fraudulent mobile application being shared via WhatsApp under the name “Govt Schemes J&K Bank.” This malicious app is designed to deceive users and unlawfully obtain sensitive financial information.
Once installed, the fake app prompts users to enter OTPs, debit/credit card details, and other confidential banking credentials. The stolen data is then misused by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to victims’ bank accounts. Alarmingly, it has come to notice that the app installs the genuine J&K Bank mPay application on the fraudster’s device using the victim’s login credentials, enabling them to carry out transactions undetected.
District Police Anantnag strongly advises the public to adhere to the following precautions:
DO NOT download or install any mobile app received via unverified WhatsApp or SMS links.
NEVER share your OTPs, card numbers, CVV, or ATM PINs with anyone—even if they claim to be from a bank or government agency.
Always download financial apps only from official app stores (Google Play Store / Apple App Store).
Report any suspicious activity or unauthorized financial transactions to the nearest police station or Cyber Crime Cell immediately.
A formal investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those behind this cyber fraud. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and help spread awareness to prevent others from falling victim to such scams.
