Sheikh Abdullah remembered on 44th death anniversary as NC leaders recall his political and social legacy

Srinagar, Sep 8: The National Conference on Tuesday observed the 44th death anniversary of its founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, at his mausoleum in Naseem Bagh, Srinagar, with party president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and several senior leaders attending the commemorative programme.

Party leaders and workers gathered to pay tributes to Sheikh Abdullah and recalled his role in Jammu and Kashmir's political history. Speakers highlighted his contributions to education, healthcare, land reforms and communal harmony.

MP Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan said people from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir continued to gather on Sheikh Abdullah's death anniversary to acknowledge his services to the people.

NC leader Majeed Larmi described Sheikh Abdullah as a leader who dedicated his life to the people of Kashmir, India and humanity.

Senior NC leader Nasir Aslam Wani said Sheikh Abdullah played a significant role in giving people a political voice, safeguarding their rights and promoting education across Jammu and Kashmir.

NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said the anniversary reflected the collective political struggle associated with Sheikh Abdullah and the movement that shaped Jammu and Kashmir's political identity.

Chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq recalled Sheikh Abdullah's contributions to education, healthcare and communal harmony, with particular emphasis on the land reforms introduced during his tenure.

The Jammu and Kashmir Big Landed Estates Abolition Act of 1950 abolished large landed estates and facilitated the transfer of land to actual tillers. The legislation is widely regarded as a major agrarian reform that significantly transformed land ownership patterns in the erstwhile State.

Education and Health Minister Sakina Itoo also paid tribute, saying Sheikh Abdullah's contribution to Jammu and Kashmir's development and the protection of people's rights would remain an important part of the region's history.

MLA Hazratbal Salman Ali Sagar said people from different sections of society attended the commemorative programme, reflecting the continued public reverence for Sheikh Abdullah and his political principles, advocacy of peace and developmental vision.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah died on September 8, 1982, at the age of 75. The National Conference observes his death anniversary every year at his mausoleum in Naseem Bagh.
