Srinagar, Oct 6: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has directed all its Gazetted Officers to adopt home composting at their respective residences, with submission of geotagged photographs made mandatory for compliance and release of their salary for the current month.
The directive was issued through Order No. 1158 of 2026 dated October 6 as part of the Corporation’s efforts to strengthen waste management at source, promote decentralised processing of biodegradable waste and reduce the volume of waste transported to municipal processing facilities.
As per the order, officers are required to segregate biodegradable and wet waste generated at their homes and process it using a suitable home-composting method. The composting arrangement must be maintained regularly and kept functional, rather than being established merely to fulfil the initial compliance requirement.
The officers have been given 10 days from the date of issuance to submit geotagged photographs of their composting facility or activity to the concerned Zonal Officer or Sectional Head. Records of compliance will be maintained by the concerned authorities, who will subsequently submit a consolidated report to the Municipal Commissioner within the stipulated timeframe.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging responsible waste management practices at the household level, with senior officials expected to lead by example in adopting decentralised methods of waste processing.
The order has come into effect immediately.
