In the 125th episode of his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned the well-deserved national attention to the remarkable strides Jammu and Kashmir has been making in the realm of sports especially after the abrogation of Article 370. Even though we have been facing grave challenges including natural adversities like floods and persistent rainfall, J&K has not only demonstrated resilience but we are slowly emerging as a budding hub for sporting excellence and innovation. In recent times we successfully hosted high-profile events like the Royal Premier League (RPL) and the country’s first-ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival at the Dal Lake which is a small example of transformative journey. The significance of these momentous developments extends far beyond the playing field. It was not very long ago that Jammu and Kashmir was synonymous with conflict, instability, and missed opportunities. However, our recent sporting successes offer a refreshing counter-narrative which is rooted in peace, youth empowerment, and cultural resurgence. The Royal Premier League, a local cricketing initiative, has ignited enthusiasm among the youth and it will go a long way in nurturing local talent. The league has provided a platform where aspirations meet opportunity, encouraging our young players to dream big and work hard for national recognition. Equally commendable is the launch of the Khelo India Water Sports Festival on the pristine waters of Dal Lake. This event not only marked a first in the country’s sports history but it also signifies the government’s commitment to integrating the unique geographical features of J&K, like our thriving water bodies into mainstream sporting activities. Water sports like kayaking, canoeing, and rowing are not just leisure activities; they are competitive disciplines with immense potential. By promoting them in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has laid the groundwork for holistic development — combining tourism, sport, and youth engagement. Such initiatives are instrumental in inculcating a sense of normalcy and national integration also among the youngsters. Sport has a unique power to transcend barriers — be they of geography, language, or ideology. The ongoing sports renaissance in Jammu and Kashmir is an illustration of this potential. It also aligns with the broader goals of the Khelo India Mission, which seeks to make sports an integral part of India’s educational and developmental framework. Yet, to sustain this momentum, we need to continue investment in infrastructure, coaching, and grassroots talent identification. Equally important is the role of local groups and elders in supporting and celebrating their athletes. In celebrating these milestones, we will recognize them not as isolated achievements but as harbingers of a new era for Jammu and Kashmir.
