Srinagar pedestrian safety under threat from encroachments, poor infrastructure

June 13, 2025 | BK News Service

Srinagar, known for its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is grappling with a pressing issue that affects its daily commuters: the safety and accessibility of its roads for pedestrians. The city's infrastructure, once designed to accommodate foot traffic, is increasingly becoming inhospitable due to various urban challenges.
One of the primary concerns is the widespread encroachment of footpaths. Areas like Lal Chowk, Amira Kadal, and Maharaj Gunj have witnessed street vendors occupying sidewalks, forcing pedestrians onto the roads. This not only narrows the walking space but also exposes individuals to the risk of accidents. Despite directives from the High Court to remove such encroachments, enforcement remains inconsistent, allowing the problem to persist .
The shortage of designated parking spaces exacerbates the situation. In downtown areas like Nowhatta and Zaina Kadal, vehicles are often parked on sidewalks and narrow lanes, obstructing pedestrian movement. This not only leads to traffic bottlenecks but also forces pedestrians to navigate through congested roads, increasing the likelihood of accidents .
Beyond encroachments and parking issues, the city's infrastructure poses challenges. Many footpaths are either too narrow, poorly maintained, or non-existent, compelling pedestrians to walk on roads. The absence of pedestrian crossings and traffic-calming measures further endangers those on foot. Inadequate urban planning has led to a scenario where pedestrian safety is compromised for vehicular convenience .
The consequences of these infrastructural deficiencies are dire. In 2023, nearly half of the road accident fatalities in Srinagar were pedestrians. Out of 54 deaths, 26 were pedestrians, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures
Strict implementation of laws against encroachments and illegal parking is essential.
Widening footpaths, creating designated pedestrian crossings, and ensuring proper signage can significantly enhance safety.
Educating both vendors and the public about the importance of maintaining clear walkways can foster a culture of respect for pedestrian spaces.
By prioritizing pedestrian infrastructure and safety, Srinagar can ensure that its roads remain accessible and secure for all residents and visitors.
