Srinagar, July 21: Theatre, literature, culinary heritage and children's activities took centre stage on the fourth day of the Chinar Book Festival at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), drawing enthusiastic participation from readers, students and families.
The day opened with a discussion on "From Soil to Soul: Culinary Traditions and Sustainability," where Chef Yaseen Reshi, Rajni Wanchoo and Khair Ull Nissa Sheikh highlighted Kashmir's traditional food culture, sustainable cooking practices and the importance of preserving indigenous cuisines.
A major attraction was the session "Theatre in Kashmir: Reviving a Living Tradition," which brought together leading playwrights, actors and scholars to discuss the evolution and future of Kashmiri theatre.
Dr. Farooq Fayaz traced Kashmir's theatrical roots to ancient Sanskrit traditions, while Nisar Naseem described 1970-1989 as the golden era of modern Kashmiri theatre. Actor Kusum Tikoo encouraged young artists to embrace new platforms such as street theatre and social media, while Rohit Bhatt advocated theatre clubs in schools and colleges to nurture future talent.
The National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) organised sessions on "Urdu in the Digital Age" and the release of a book on Mir Taqi Mir, highlighting the need to preserve and promote Urdu through digital platforms.
The Children's Corner attracted nearly 4,000 students with storytelling, quizzes, financial literacy sessions and an Arabic calligraphy workshop. Additional Chief Secretary, Power Development Department, Ashwani Kumar, interacted with young participants and appreciated their enthusiasm.
The cultural evening featured theatre performances by local groups, a Dastangoi storytelling presentation, and musical performances by Aijaz Sahir, Zubaida Ali, and Asif-Tanzeeb.
The festival will continue until July 26. Day five will feature an interaction with actor Rakesh Bedi, an innovation showcase by IUST students, and a special session titled "Daughters of the Valley: Voices, Vision & Legacy."
