Baramulla, Oct 2: Police in Baramulla seized 6.8 kilograms of banned polythene during a checking drive at Wagoora Market and imposed a fine of ₹5,300, officials said.
An additional penalty of ₹200 was imposed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) during the enforcement operation.
Officials said such drives are aimed at curbing the use and improper disposal of polythene, which contributes to plastic pollution and can adversely affect land and water ecosystems.
Discarded polythene can clog drains and water channels and contribute to litter accumulation. Improper disposal, including burning of plastic waste, can also create environmental and health concerns.
Environment-friendly alternatives such as cloth, jute and canvas bags can be used in place of conventional plastic carry bags. Paper and certified compostable bags may also be used where appropriate, while reusable alternatives are encouraged to reduce dependence on single-use plastics.
Police said enforcement drives against banned polythene and other prohibited products will continue across the district.
