7,656 Rohingyas, 504 Bangladeshi Nationals Identified Across J&K: Government

Jammu, August 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has informed the High-Level Committee on Demographic Change that 7,656 Rohingyas and 504 Bangladeshi nationals have been identified across the Union Territory’s 20 districts.

The figures were presented before members of the committee during their field visit to Jammu. Officials also highlighted security concerns related to the presence of foreign nationals, particularly in areas located near the international borders.

According to the government data, 6,737 of the identified Rohingyas are residing across the 10 districts of Jammu division, while 919 have been identified in the 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley.

The data further shows that 46 Bangladeshi nationals have been identified in Jammu division and 458 in Kashmir Valley, taking the total number across J&K to 504.

Officials also provided details of cases registered in connection with the foreign nationals. In the Jammu region, 101 cases have been registered involving 179 men and 21 women.

In Kashmir Valley, 16 cases have been registered involving 41 women and four men.

The information was shared with the High-Level Committee on Demographic Change, which was constituted by the Centre to examine demographic trends, migration patterns and related security concerns in border areas.

The committee’s visit to Jammu comes amid increased official attention on the identification and monitoring of foreign nationals residing in the Union Territory, particularly in strategically sensitive areas.
