Beggary remains a major problem in Srinagar city, with hundreds of people begging on the streets every day and the problem is particularly acute in the city center and near tourist attractions.
Many people who beg in the city are from poor families and have no other way to survive.
Other people who beg are children either orphaned or abandoned, or forced to beg by their families.
The government and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have taken a number of steps to address the beggary problem. The government has set up rehabilitation centers for beggars, and the SMC has launched a number of programs to provide education and job training to beggars.
“However, more needs to be done to address the root causes of beggary, such as poverty and unemployment. The government and the private sector need to work together to create more jobs and to improve the lives of people living in poverty,” locals said.
