Srinagar, August 7: Consumers across Kashmir have been advised to carefully review the contents of their online shopping carts following a controversy over the alleged listing of pork products on Blinkit's recently launched platform in the Valley.
The issue surfaced after screenshots circulating on social media purportedly showed pork products being available for delivery through the quick-commerce platform. The alleged listings prompted strong reactions from several religious organisations and trade bodies, which described them as insensitive to the religious and cultural sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In the wake of the controversy, consumer groups and business representatives have urged shoppers to exercise caution while using online delivery applications and to verify product descriptions before confirming their purchases.
Several trade bodies have also called on Blinkit to review its product catalogue, remove any listings deemed inappropriate for the region and introduce location-specific safeguards to ensure that products considered offensive to local religious and cultural sensitivities are not displayed or offered for delivery in Kashmir.
The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) have expressed concern over the issue, stating that companies operating in the region should take local customs and religious sensitivities into account. They also urged the company to implement stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Consumer representatives have advised the public to remain vigilant while placing online orders, particularly during the initial phase of Blinkit's operations in Kashmir, and to promptly report any objectionable or inaccurate product listings through the platform's grievance mechanisms.
The controversy has also reignited discussions on the need for e-commerce companies to adopt region-specific product catalogues and content filters instead of relying solely on uniform nationwide listings in culturally sensitive markets.
