Srinagar, Sep 22: Casual and daily-wage employees working in various government departments held a protest in Srinagar on Tuesday, calling for higher wages and regularization of their services.

The demonstration was organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Casual/Daily Wagers Forum under the leadership of its president, Sajad Ahmed Parray.

The workers said their demands for regularization and improved wages have remained pending for years. They appealed to the administration to take concrete measures to resolve the issues affecting them.

The protest took place amid the ongoing session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, where matters related to temporary and daily-wage employees are being discussed.

The government has informed the House that it is working towards a uniform framework for the regularization of temporary workers, including daily-rated employees, casual and seasonal labourers, contractual staff and other need-based workers.

It has also stated that a committee constituted in March 2025 is examining the humanitarian, legal and financial aspects associated with regularization. Consultations with the departments concerned are also being carried out before a final policy is considered.

The protesting workers urged the government to speed up the process and take immediate steps to address their concerns regarding wages and job regularization.

The demonstration centred on their long-pending employment demands and the need for a concrete resolution to their grievances.
