Srinagar, Sep 08: Five films by filmmakers from Jammu and Kashmir have been selected for the J&K Select Section, the competitive category of the first International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026.
The films were shortlisted on the recommendations of the festival’s Preview Committee after reviewing the submissions and assessing their artistic quality and suitability for the competitive section. The selection brings together varied genres, narratives and cinematic perspectives, with a strong focus on Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage, social realities and lived experiences.
The selected films are Searching for the Grandpa, directed by Mohammad Wali; Arifa, directed by Rohin Ravendran Nair; Batt Koch (The Lost Lane), directed by Siddarth Koul and Ankit Wali; Tasrufdaar (Djinns of Kashmir), directed by Kapil Mattoo; and Naqsh-e-Daur (The Story of Ghulam Nabi Dhar), directed by Baba Tassaduq Hussain.
The films, spanning Kashmiri and Hindi, explore themes of childhood, family, memory, displacement, identity, heritage and resilience, while reflecting the changing social landscape of Kashmir.
Searching for the Grandpa follows two young siblings in a Kashmiri village as they spend Eid searching for their grandfather. Arifa tells the story of a woman who returns to her ancestral home in Kashmir and is confronted by memories of her childhood and father.
Batt Koch examines displacement, identity and the enduring connection to home through the experiences of a Kashmiri migrant family. Tasrufdaar (Djinns of Kashmir) blends mystery and memory while engaging with the lasting scars of Kashmir’s past.
Naqsh-e-Daur (The Story of Ghulam Nabi Dhar) chronicles the life and legacy of a Padma Shri-honoured woodcarver from downtown Srinagar, offering a glimpse into Kashmir’s rich craftsmanship, cultural heritage and resilience.
The five films will feature in the competitive programming of the four-day IFFJK 2026, providing audiences and filmmakers a platform to engage with distinctive cinematic voices and stories emerging from Jammu and Kashmir.
