Srinagar, September 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Friday after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The resolution referred to two earlier resolutions passed by the House, including the June 26, 2000 resolution on autonomy and the November 6, 2024 resolution seeking restoration of special status. It also called for forwarding the latest resolution to the Government of India.
The reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution triggered strong objections from BJP members. BJP legislators entered the Well of the House, raised slogans and opposed any discussion on autonomy. Some members also tore copies of the resolution during the protest. BJP MLA R S Pathania said the party would not allow a discussion on the issue of autonomy.
The National Conference members defended the reference to the earlier resolution and maintained that the party would continue to pursue what it considers the rights and interests of Jammu and Kashmir. Slogans were raised from both sides as the confrontation intensified.
The Speaker intervened as the commotion continued and the House was eventually adjourned for half an hour amid the uproar.
Earlier, while moving the statehood resolution, Omar Abdullah said Jammu and Kashmir had been promised restoration of statehood after delimitation and elections. He argued that both steps had taken place and said the government wanted the Centre to honour its commitment on statehood.
The 2000 resolution, passed during Farooq Abdullah's government, had sought restoration of greater autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Cabinet under then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee subsequently rejected it. The National Conference again included implementation of the 2000 autonomy resolution among its political commitments in its 2024 election manifesto.
The latest confrontation adds to tensions that have marked the ongoing autumn session of the Assembly, with disagreements between the treasury and opposition benches repeatedly disrupting proceedings.
