
The Directorate of Lifelong Learning and Skill Development (DLL&SD), University of Kashmir (KU), observed the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2026 at the Main Campus in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Ageing, Moul Mouj Foundation (MMF) and Geriatric Orthopedic Society of India (GOSI), Bengaluru.
Observed under the theme “Wisdom Beyond Retirement,” the event aimed to highlight the valuable experience, knowledge and contributions of older persons and promote greater understanding of healthy and meaningful ageing.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan said that older persons remain an important part of society and their experience and wisdom should continue to be valued. She said, “Retirement should not mean withdrawal from society; experience and wisdom continue to have value.”
Prof. Khan also highlighted the role of educational institutions in promoting greater awareness about ageing and encouraging communities to remain responsive to the needs and contributions of senior citizens.
Dean, School of Open Learning, KU, Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad said that universities have an important role in creating opportunities for lifelong learning and meaningful engagement for older persons.
Founder and Chairman, MMF, Dr. Zubair Saleem, emphasised that retirement should be seen as the beginning of a new phase of life rather than its end. He highlighted the need for social engagement, dignity and opportunities for older persons to remain active and connected with society.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Director DLL&SD, KU, Prof. Bashir Joo, said that the programme was aimed at recognising the contribution of older persons and creating greater awareness about their needs, rights and wellbeing.
The event was attended by representatives from civil society, volunteers from MMF and GOSI, faculty members and students of the University.
