Jammu, June 21: As part of its ongoing Sunday Theatre Series, Natrang presented a captivating performance of the Hindi comedy play ‘Chor’, written by Rajindra Kumar Sharma and directed by Neeraj Kant, at Natrang Studio Theatre. Packed with situational humour, witty exchanges, and unexpected twists, the play kept the audience thoroughly entertained, drawing frequent laughter and applause throughout the performance.
Speaking on the occasion, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur highlighted the significance of Natrang’s Sunday Theatre Series, which continues to promote regular theatrical activity in Jammu. He informed the audience that for the past 22 years, Natrang artists have worked tirelessly, despite numerous constraints, to ensure that Jammu witnesses a theatre performance every Sunday. He also expressed his gratitude to all those whose support and dedication have made this remarkable cultural initiative possible.
The play revolved around a cleverly conceived domestic incident, presented in a highly engaging and theatrical style. The story opens in the dead of night with Naresh fast asleep in his room. His slumber is suddenly interrupted by a suspicious noise, and to his astonishment, he discovers a young woman disguised as a thief standing before him. Brandishing what appears to be a gun, she threatens him and demands money. Frightened and bewildered, Naresh pleads for mercy, but the intruder remains unyielding, projecting the image of a seasoned criminal.
In an unexpected development, Naresh gathers enough courage to snatch the weapon from her. Attempting to turn the tables, he soon discovers that the gun is merely a toy. This revelation instantly alters the balance of power. Unfazed, the young woman changes her strategy and begins blackmailing him, threatening to raise an alarm and falsely accuse him of molestation if he refuses to meet her demands.
The escalating commotion soon draws the attention of Naresh’s wife and brother-in-law, who rush into the room and are shocked by the bizarre scene unfolding before them. Completely cornered and unable to explain the situation, Naresh eventually surrenders to the pressure and admits that he can no longer cope with the chaos.
Just when the tension appears to have reached its climax, the play takes a delightful comic turn. The audience learns that the so-called “lady thief” is actually Naresh’s sister-in-law, who orchestrated the entire drama to make her first meeting with him memorable and entertaining.
The production featured spirited performances by Natrang actors Mehak Chib, Aadesh Dhar, Supria Gorka and Nikshya Mahajan, all of whom effectively captured the comic essence of the script. The lighting design by Neeraj Kant enhanced the dramatic impact of the production, while stage presentations and overall coordination were efficiently managed by Akash Wadhwan.
The performance once again demonstrated Natrang’s commitment to sustaining a vibrant theatre culture in Jammu and providing audiences with quality theatrical experiences on a regular basis.
