Bandipora, July 31: Heavy rainfall on Friday triggered flash flood like conditions in several parts of north Kashmir's Bandipora district, inundating residential areas, flooding a government school, blocking roads and disrupting normal life.

The worst affected areas included Malpora, Saderkoot Bala, SK Bala and Doudwan, where rainwater carrying mud and debris entered residential localities following incessant rainfall during the early hours of the day.

The Government Primary School at Ganie Mohalla in Malpora, Saderkoot Bala, was closed after water, mud and debris entered several classrooms, making the premises unsafe for students and staff.

Zonal Education Officer Hajin, Masood Ahmad, confirmed that class work had been suspended for the day as a precautionary measure, stating that the safety of students remained the department's top priority.

The flooding disrupted academic activities and raised concern among parents and local residents, who appealed to the district administration to assess the damage, safeguard the school building from further deterioration and restore normalcy at the earliest.

Officials said flash floods also brought mud, uprooted trees and debris onto the main road and several link roads in Malpora and Doudwan, disrupting vehicular movement and increasing the risk of landslides.

A police team led by the Duty Officer of Ajas Police Station, Araf Ahmad, along with local residents, carried out a clearance operation and removed the debris and fallen trees, restoring traffic movement within a few hours.

Officials said the Senior Superintendent of Police, Bandipora, was closely monitoring the situation and had deployed police personnel in vulnerable areas to assist residents and ensure public safety.

Authorities have advised people living in vulnerable areas and commuters to remain alert, warning that the prevailing weather conditions could trigger more flash floods and landslides.
