Jammu, Sep 23: The 131st birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh was observed across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, with tributes and public programmes held in Jammu amid a political dispute in the Legislative Assembly over the government holiday marking his birth anniversary.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid tribute to Maharaja Hari Singh on his Janm-Jayanti and highlighted his contribution to social reforms and public welfare.
Sinha said the former ruler introduced several measures aimed at improving the lives of people and empowering different sections of society. He added that the values associated with public service, equality and inclusive development remained relevant.
In Jammu, the Yuva Rajput Sabha organized a Maharally to commemorate the occasion. The rally started from Ban Talab and passed through several parts of the city before reaching the Maharaja Hari Singh statue near Tawi Bridge, where participants paid floral tributes.
The celebrations followed a cultural programme organized by the Yuva Rajput Sabha on Tuesday evening at the Maharaja’s statue near Tawi Bridge and Prem Nagar Park. The event featured programmes highlighting Dogra culture, traditions and the life and contributions of Maharaja Hari Singh.
September 23 is observed as a government holiday across Jammu and Kashmir to mark Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary. The holiday was included in the official calendar in 2022.
This year’s observance came a day after a heated exchange in the Legislative Assembly over the status of the holiday.
National Conference MLA Abdul Majid Larmi had raised the issue of restoring holidays associated with party founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and said the government should consider withdrawing the September 23 holiday if those holidays were not restored.
The remarks triggered strong opposition from BJP legislators, who protested against any proposal to remove the holiday and raised slogans in support of Maharaja Hari Singh.
BJP MLA Devyani Rana said the September 23 holiday was the result of a long-standing public demand and should continue.
PDP MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Para also raised the demand for restoring the holiday associated with Sheikh Abdullah and called for consideration of July 13 as a public holiday.
Congress legislators supported the demand concerning Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary while maintaining a distinction between that issue and the existing holiday for Maharaja Hari Singh.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather told the members that decisions regarding government holidays did not fall within his authority. BJP members later staged a walkout from the Assembly.
The September 23 holiday was introduced in the official calendar in 2022. Holidays associated with Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary and July 13 were removed from the government holiday calendar in 2020.
