Srinagar, October 16: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo on Friday said the district administration has completed the installation of safety fencing on a bridge over the River Jhelum to prevent accidental falls and suicide attempts.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to the site, Labroo said the initiative followed concerns raised by police and local residents over the absence of adequate protective barriers, which posed safety risks and left the bridge vulnerable to incidents of people jumping into the river.
He said the administration decided to take up the work after inspecting the location and assessing the concerns. Funds available at the district level were redirected to complete the project.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, the fencing was installed within a short period and at a minimal cost. Special attention was also given to preserving the city's appearance and ensuring that the scenic view of the Jhelum remained unobstructed.
Labroo expressed hope that the safety measures would reduce accidental falls and help prevent the location from becoming a site for suicide attempts.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Roads and Buildings Department, the Planning Office and the police in completing the work.
The Deputy Commissioner said fencing on the old bridge had already been completed. The administration would consider similar safety measures at other vulnerable locations if concerns were brought to its attention.
