Srinagar Police Summon Iltija Mufti in Probe Into Alleged Assault During Protest

August 06, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, August 6: Srinagar Police have summoned People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti to join an investigation after registering a case over the alleged assault of a police officer during a protest in the city earlier this week.

According to police, the incident took place on August 4 during a demonstration led by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti at S.K. Park. The protestors allegedly attempted to march towards Lal Chowk despite permission having been denied by the authorities. Police said some demonstrators tried to breach barricades and block Residency Road, leading to a scuffle with security personnel.

Police have alleged that during the altercation, Iltija Mufti assaulted a police officer on duty and bit his forearm, resulting in injuries. The officer was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he received medical treatment.

Following the incident, Police Station Kothibagh registered FIR No. 63/2026 and initiated an investigation. Police said Iltija Mufti has been asked to appear before the investigating officer on Thursday as part of the probe.

Officials also stated that the injured officer was treated in accordance with standard medical protocols, including wound management and other preventive care based on clinical assessment.

There was no immediate response from Iltija Mufti or the People's Democratic Party regarding the allegations. The claims made by the police have not been independently verified, and the investigation remains underway.

The case is linked to the August 4 protest organised by the PDP against the constitutional changes introduced in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019. Several political parties had announced demonstrations across the Valley, many of which were restricted or prevented by the authorities.
