August 04, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Baramulla, August 4: The body of a 14-year-old boy who drowned in the Pohru River in Sopore three days ago was recovered on Tuesday after an intensive search operation involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Jammu and Kashmir Police and local volunteers.

The deceased was identified as Furqan Rafiq Hajam, son of Rafiq Hajam, a resident of Wadoora in Sopore.

According to officials, the teenager accidentally slipped into the river while bathing on August 2, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation. The efforts continued for three days but were hindered by the strong flow of the river.

On the third day, teams from SDRF Component Baramulla and SDRF Sub-Component Sopore, along with police personnel and local volunteers, located and recovered the body near Nowpora, falling under the jurisdiction of Fruit Mandi Sopore.

Following the completion of the necessary legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family for the final rites.

The tragic incident has plunged Wadoora village into mourning. Authorities have once again urged the public, especially children and teenagers, to exercise extreme caution and refrain from entering rivers and other water bodies, particularly when water currents are strong.
