
DIG, SSP escape unhurt in terrorist gunfire
Two terrorists and a CRPF jawan were killed in a 15-hour long encounter in a village in Hiranagar sector, close to International Border (IB) in Kathua district on Wednesday. A civilian injured in the terrorists firing is undergoing treatment in a hospital.
“Both the terrorists were killed in the encounter by the security forces. One of the militants was killed last night while another was killed today afternoon,” ADGP Jammu Anand Jain told reporters.
The encounter had started between terrorists and security forces in village Saidal Sohal in Hiranagar belt yesterday evening
A huge quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the possession of slain terrorists, a police official said.
The recoveries include site comprising three magazines containing 30 rounds, one magazine containing 24 rounds, 75 rounds in a separate polythene bag, three live grenades, currency notes (INR) of Rs 500 denomination worth 2 lakh, eatables including Pakistan-made chocolates, dry chana and chapatis, Pakistan-made medicines, pain killer injections, two packs of A4 battery cells, one handset having antenna and two wires hanging from the handset, he said.
The ADGP Jammu said the combing operation has not been lifted yet.
“We suspect the presence of some more militants and that is why the search operation is going on,” he said.
He said it appears the terrorists had freshly infiltrated and an investigation has been launched.
A CRPF jawan identified as Constable G D Kabir Dass R/o MP was killed in the encounter.
“A civilian identified as Onkar, 45, also suffered injury in his left arm when terrorists fired at him. He was admitted in Government Medical College, Kathua,” said a police official.
Meanwhile, DIG of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police Kathua had a narrow escape after a terrorist fired a barrage of bullets on their vehicles amid the ongoing anti-militant operation in Hiranagar, an official said.
Sources said the cavalcade of the two police officers came under attack after a hiding militant fired over two dozen rounds.
“There however was no harm caused to any of the officers’ or any of the personnel,” they said.
On June 9, terrorists attacked a bus ferrying pilgrims in Reasi district following which the vehicle plunged into a gorge leaving 9 dead and 43 injured.
