Srinagar, Oct 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has formally approved an increase in the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000, addressing their long-pending demand for enhanced remuneration.
The Health and Medical Education Department issued Government Order No. 747-JK(HME) of 2026 on October 21, sanctioning the revised stipend for MBBS and BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), across the Union Territory.
As per the order, the enhanced stipend will be effective from October 1, 2026. Eligible interns will therefore receive the revised amount retrospectively from the beginning of the month.
The order was issued by Saugat Biswas, Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, Health and Medical Education Department, following a reference to a communication from the Finance Department dated October 20.
The decision comes amid protests by medical interns at Government Medical Colleges across Jammu and Kashmir and SKIMS Medical College, Bemina. The interns had been demanding an official written order, maintaining that verbal assurances from the authorities were insufficient.
The All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) had repeatedly urged the government to complete the necessary formalities and fulfil its commitment to MBBS and BDS interns.
With the formal approval now issued, the monthly stipend has been increased by Rs 12,700, more than doubling the previous amount. The revised rate covers eligible MBBS and BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates, across Jammu and Kashmir.
