Sonamarg, Jan 28: An avalanche struck the New Truck Yard area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir late Tuesday night, causing panic among locals and hoteliers as heavy snowfall and strong winds swept the region.
Officials said the avalanche occurred around 10:12 pm following intense snow and gusty winds in the upper reaches. Snow entered several guest houses after rooftops gave way under pressure, leading to temporary disruption in the area.
Teams from the Sonamarg Development Authority and local police rushed to the spot and assessed the situation. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported and no major structural damage was found.
Officials noted that the New Truck Yard area lies within a designated avalanche-prone zone and remains vulnerable during peak winter. They recalled a similar incident nearly a decade ago that resulted in loss of life, highlighting the recurring risk.
The situation is being closely monitored amid ongoing snowfall and weather advisories. Authorities have urged locals, tourists and business owners to stay alert, avoid unnecessary movement in vulnerable areas, and strictly follow official advisories
