Srinagar, Nov 1: The Agriculture Graduates Association of Jammu and Kashmir (AGA-JK) has temporarily suspended its ongoing peaceful protest following assurances from Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar regarding the resolution of its long-pending demands.
A delegation of the Association, headed by Dr Zakir Amin, met the Minister in the presence of Director Agriculture Kashmir and other departmental officials. During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the concerns of unemployed agriculture graduates and called for reforms in the department's recruitment and service structure.
The Association pointed out that the Agriculture Department has not conducted any substantial direct recruitment since 2005, leaving a large number of qualified graduates awaiting employment opportunities. The delegation also submitted a memorandum outlining its demands.
During the interaction, the Minister acknowledged the concerns of agriculture graduates, particularly regarding the JAEO cadre. He agreed to pursue the proposed merger of the AEA and JAEO cadres, along with the creation of JAEO posts at the block level while retaining existing positions. He also assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the Chief Minister.
Regarding recruitment and promotions in the gazetted cadre, the Minister said a 50:50 ratio had already been proposed and approved. He assured that further steps would be taken after completing the necessary formalities, including the framing of the relevant TOBR.
The Minister also assured that pending court cases affecting the recruitment process would be taken up with the Law Department and other concerned authorities. He emphasised the need for lasting reforms in service rules, rather than temporary arrangements, and indicated that the process could take between six months and one year.
Following the assurances, the Association decided to temporarily suspend its protest while awaiting concrete action on the issues raised.
AGA-JK reiterated its demand for fair employment opportunities, recognition of academic qualifications, transparent recruitment procedures and appropriate representation within the department.
The Association said it would remain in regular contact with the Minister's office to monitor progress and expressed hope that its long-standing concerns would be addressed through a permanent solution. It, however, reserved the right to decide its future course of action depending on the progress made.
