Srinagar, Nov 1: The ruling National Conference (NC) has reportedly approached three senior party leaders with an offer to contest the Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency amid growing internal differences following the recent Cabinet expansion and the announced resignation of incumbent MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.
The leaders being considered for the parliamentary seat include Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, six-time MLA Mubarak Gul and Pampore MLA and former MP Justice (Retd) Hasnain Masoodi.
The move is being viewed as an attempt by the party leadership to address dissatisfaction among senior legislators and prevent further divisions within the organisation ahead of a possible vacancy in the Srinagar-Budgam constituency.
Yawar Masoodi, son of Hasnain Masoodi, has confirmed that the party leadership approached several senior leaders with the same offer, including Rather and Mubarak Gul.
Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim Rather has reportedly indicated to the party high command that his daughter, Dr Shagufta Rather, could be considered for the parliamentary seat instead of him.
The developments come amid growing resentment within the National Conference following the induction of four new ministers into Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's Cabinet on October 27. Several senior legislators were reportedly unhappy over their exclusion from the expanded Council of Ministers.
Mubarak Gul, who was recently appointed the party's General Secretary before being removed from the position within days, has also expressed dissatisfaction. His supporters have reportedly held protests in Srinagar, demanding greater consideration for the senior leader.
Gul has announced that he will address the developments within the party at a press conference scheduled for November 4.
The political situation has further intensified following Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi's announcement that he intends to resign from the National Conference as well as his Lok Sabha membership on November 3, citing differences with the party leadership over electoral commitments and constitutional issues.
His proposed departure could create a vacancy in the Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency, potentially paving the way for a by-election.
Amid the developments, the party is also reportedly considering senior legislator Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi for the post of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. However, Gurezi has said he has not been formally informed about any such proposal.
The leadership is facing pressure from several legislators who have sought changes in the functioning of the government, greater consultation in decision-making and a review of ministerial performance.
The reported discussions over the parliamentary seat come at a time when the National Conference is attempting to manage internal differences and maintain organisational unity following the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
