Ghazal Khan celebrates decade of transformative work in Divyang Cricket

September 04, 2024 | BK News Service

Ghazal Khan, a stalwart in advocating for differently-abled athletes, marks a decade of transformative work in Divyang Cricket. Over the past 10 years, her unwavering dedication has not only elevated the status of disability cricket in India but has also set a global precedent for inclusivity in sports. She was warmly welcomed at the DCCBI admin office by our General Secretary Haroon Rasheed, Vice President Murugan Raj, and former Indian Divyang Cricket Team Captain Kailash Prasad, who greeted me with a beautiful bouquet. Also, the Indian politician and Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Prof. SP Singh Baghel, welcomed and honored Ghazal Khan at his residence. Prof. Baghel commended Ghazal Khan on her remarkable decade-long service with DCCBI.
Ghazal’s journey with the Divyang Cricket Control Board of India (DCCBI) began in 2014, a time when opportunities for differently-abled cricketers were limited. Her life took a dramatic turn in 2015 after a major accident, where she had only a 2% chance of survival. This new lease on life fueled her dedication to providing a platform for differently-abled athletes. Her relentless advocacy and commitment to their cause led to her appointment as CEO of DCCBI in 2021. Under her leadership, the organization reached new heights, organizing national and international tournaments that showcased the incredible talents of Divyang cricketers. Her leadership has transformed differently-abled sports, leading to the Indian Divyang Cricket team's 2015 Asia Cup victory and the Indian Wheelchair Cricket team's runner-up finish in 2019. These achievements have elevated disability cricket and challenged societal perceptions, showcasing the sport's profound impact on athletes' lives.
Ghazal sharing few stories said, " We have Lalit Pathak, a wheelchair cricketer, lost both legs in a tragic train accident and faced deep depression. Joining wheelchair cricket transformed his life, giving him a renewed purpose and the vision to play for India. His journey from despair to hope shows that physical limitations don't define potential.”
Another inspiring story is that of Amir, whose talent to bowl with his leg as he lost both hands in a tragic incident recently caught the attention of none other than Sachin Tendulkar. The way Sachin appreciated Amir’s skill is a reward not just for Amir but for all Divyang cricketers. Amir’s story is now a beacon of hope, showing that with determination and hard work, recognition and success are within reach. His rise to stardom is inspiring countless others, proving that their dreams are valid and achievable.
Ghazal further added, "These are just two stories among thousands. We have over 4,000 Divyang cricketers across the country, each with their own unique story. These players live to play cricket, and cricket has given them a reason to live. It’s not just a sport for them; it’s a lifeline, a source of pride, and a platform to showcase their abilities to the world. Every day, I am reminded of the incredible impact that Divyang Cricket has on the lives of these athletes, and I am deeply honored to be a part of their journey.”
Beyond DCCBI, Ghazal’s influence extends internationally as the Secretary of International Affairs at the International Cricket Council for the Physically Challenged and Vice Chairperson of the International Council of Wheelchair Cricket. Her work has inspired many and created pathways for the differently-abled to achieve their dreams.
Ghazal’s decade-long journey is a powerful example of how determination, resilience, and a commitment to inclusivity can create lasting change. Her efforts continue to inspire a new generation of differently-abled athletes, ensuring that their contributions to sports are recognized and celebrated.
