Srinagar, Aug 15: The University of Kashmir (KU) on Saturday celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at its Main Campus and satellite campuses, commemorating the country’s freedom struggle and paying tribute to the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who made India’s independence possible.
Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof Nilofer Khan presided over the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Main Campus. The National Flag was unfurled with full honour and respect, followed by the singing of the National Song and National Anthem. A ceremonial guard of honour was also presented on the occasion by a contingent of the University Police.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Khan recalled the long struggle for India’s independence and the sacrifices made by generations of freedom fighters to ensure that future generations could live with dignity and honour. She said Independence Day is not merely an occasion to celebrate freedom but also an opportunity to reflect upon the responsibilities that come with it.
“Freedom was achieved after years of struggle and sacrifice so that future generations could live with dignity and honour. Independence Day reminds us of the responsibility that rests upon each one of us as responsible citizens. We must honour the legacy of our freedom fighters and work towards building a nation that thrives on unity, equal opportunity and the true spirit of democracy,” Prof Khan said.
Reflecting on the philosophy of the National Flag, the Vice-Chancellor elaborated on the significance of its colours and the Ashoka Chakra, observing that the Tricolour represents values and ideals that should continue to guide citizens in their collective journey. She said the spirit of the National Flag must find expression in the actions and responsibilities of every citizen.
“We must work hard to build a nation that upholds democratic values and provides equal opportunities to all. Each one of us has a role to play in contributing to the progress of our country. Our endeavour should be to build an India where every child gets access to education and where democratic values, equality and opportunity remain at the heart of our national development,” she said.
Prof Khan emphasised the important role of educational institutions in strengthening the foundations of a progressive and democratic society. She called upon the University community, particularly its students and young scholars, to contribute to the country’s progress through knowledge, hard work, integrity and a strong sense of social responsibility.
On the occasion, personnel associated with the University’s Proctorial Wing, KU Guards and Watch & Ward staff were honoured with certificates of appreciation for their dedicated services towards maintaining discipline, protecting University assets and ensuring the safety and security of the campus community.
The ceremony was attended by the Dean Academic Affairs, Dean College Development Council, Dean Research, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Dean Students Welfare, Deans of Schools, Heads/Directors/Coordinators of departments, centres and institutes, officers of the administration, faculty members and other staff.
