KU celebrates Ambedkar Jayanti

Srinagar April 15: The Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW) in collaboration with the Department of History, University of Kashmir (KU), celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar at the Main Campus.
The event was organised to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It aimed to create awareness about his contributions to social justice, equality, and the making of the Indian Constitution.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said, “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of an inclusive and just society continues to guide us even today. His ideas remain deeply relevant in shaping a more equitable and progressive nation.”
She added that such commemorative events are important for students to understand the values of democracy, constitutional rights, and social responsibility.
Dean Students Welfare KU, Prof. Pervez Ahmad, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of Ambedkar’s contributions in promoting education and empowering marginalised communities.
Dr. Younis Rashid, faculty at the Department of History, KU who coordinated the event spoke about Dr. Ambedkar’s role as a social reformer, economist, and thinker, and emphasized the continued relevance of his ideas in contemporary society.
Students and research scholars from the Department of History shared their insights on the occasion.
Among the presenters, Shaista Amin, research scholar, linked Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision of social equality with environmental justice. Asif Nawaz, another research scholar, highlighted Ambedkar’s transformative role in modern India, emphasizing his fight against social injustice, his contribution to the Constitution, and his commitment to human dignity. Other presenters included Sameen Ahmad, Rayees Ahmad, Basira Amreen, and Munaza Mansoor.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, Cultural Officer, DSW KU. Certificates were distributed among the students who presented their speeches on Dr. Ambedkar.
