The Special Cell under the aegis of the Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW), University of Kashmir (KU), organised a day-long programme at the Main Campus to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event aimed to promote a deeper understanding of disability issues, encourage respect for the dignity and rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and raise awareness on creating inclusive academic and social environments.
In her message, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said, “An inclusive institution must ensure that every student, regardless of ability, feels supported, respected, and able to participate fully. Our commitment is to strengthen facilities and create a campus that removes barriers rather than reinforces them.”
Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, said that the University continues to prioritize student support systems and added that efforts must focus on accessibility, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving.
Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said that the observance is a reminder to recognise the needs of people with special needs beyond symbolic gestures. He said that sustained initiatives and policy-level interventions are essential for meaningful inclusion.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dean DSW KU, Prof. Pervez Ahmad, said that the University will continue to expand support services under the Special Cell and work closely with stakeholders to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
The programme included the distribution of aids and appliances among PwD, panel discussions, and technical sessions led by experts working in disability support, rehabilitation, and inclusive education.
The event was coordinated by Shaheel Mohammad, Coordinator, Special Cell, DSW KU.
It was attended by various heads of departments, faculty members, PwD participants, special educators, invited experts and students.
