Udhampur, Jan 28: A tense confrontation erupted at Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur after local legislator Pawan Gupta accused doctors of negligence following the death of a patient, leading to heated arguments during a meeting.
According to reports, the MLA summoned doctors to question their alleged absence from the emergency ward at the time of the incident. Gupta reportedly reminded the medical staff of their professional duties and demanded accountability for the patient’s death.
The discussion soon escalated into a verbal clash as several doctors strongly objected to the allegations. Witnesses said tempers flared during the exchange, and one doctor allegedly attempted to snatch the microphone from the MLA, prompting immediate intervention by those present.
Sources said the confrontation also brought to the fore concerns over alleged mismanagement and staff shortages at the hospital, with calls for improved emergency services and round-the-clock availability of doctors.
Officials said the incident and the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death are under review, and further action, if required, will be taken after a detailed assessment.
