Muqam Shahwali, Drugmulla, Nov 15: Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday evening to bid a tearful farewell to Inspector Shah Asrar-ul-Haq, one of nine personnel who lost their lives in the accidental explosion at Nowgam Police Station. The entire village was engulfed in sorrow, mourning an officer remembered for his humility, gentle nature, and unwavering commitment to duty.
Inspector Shah, known in service as Israr Ahmad Shah, joined the Jammu & Kashmir Police in 2011 and was serving with the State Investigation Agency (SIA). He is survived by his wife, two young children, and elderly parents, all devastated by his sudden and tragic death.
News of his passing spread rapidly across Drugmulla and Kupwara, prompting neighbours, relatives, and friends to rush to his home. Courtyards quickly filled with grieving villagers, many inconsolable. “He was like a younger brother to all of us,” said neighbour Ghulam Mohammad. “Soft-spoken, gentle, and always respectful. We haven’t just lost an officer; we have lost a wonderful human being.”
As Inspector Shah’s body arrived in the village, cries of anguish echoed through the streets. Women clung to one another in grief, while men struggled to contain their emotions, some carrying children too young to comprehend the tragedy. Funeral prayers were held at the local Eidgah, attended by a large crowd including district administration officials, senior police officers, and members of various security agencies — a testament to the respect he earned during his service.
“It is a devastating loss for the entire force,” said a senior police officer. “Inspector Shah was honest, dedicated, and always ready to take on difficult assignments.” Villagers shared similar sentiments, recalling his readiness to help anyone in need and his calm, composed demeanor.
As he was lowered into his grave, many mourners broke down in tears. Children stood silently beside the tricolour-draped coffin, while elders whispered prayers. “He was the pride of our village,” said Abdul Rashid, an elder. “We watched him grow from a bright boy into a brave officer. Today, Kupwara mourns deeply.”
The loss is felt not only by his family and colleagues but by the entire community. Inspector Shah Asrar-ul-Haq will be remembered as a humble, dedicated officer — a son of Kashmir who served with honour.
Earlier in the day, Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat confirmed that the explosion occurred during routine forensic examination of seized explosives. “As part of the procedure, samples had to be prepared for chemical testing. The team had been working for two days due to the large quantity. Unfortunately, at around 11:20 pm on Friday, an accidental explosion occurred,” the DGP explained, emphasizing that any speculation beyond this is unnecessary.
The blast claimed nine lives and injured 32 others, including 27 police personnel, two revenue officers, and three civilians, leaving the community and the force in profound grief.
